In 1907, Colt introduced the Police Positive, a masterpiece revolver that incorporated a "positive lock" that blocked the hammer when the trigger was not pulled.
Due to its popularity as a revolver for police officers, a variation was added with a shortened 2-inch barrel and a model chambered for the .38spl cartridge, named the Detective Special. "Detective" means detective or detective, and as the name suggests, it became a favorite among plainclothes detectives and became widely recognized as a representative model of snubnose revolvers.
This model, originally sold as a model gun, has undergone extensive modifications, resulting in a rebirth as the "R-model" with improved reproducibility, durability, and operability. The cylinder lockup issue (a condition in which the timing between trigger movement and cylinder rotation changes) that occurred in the previous model due to the faithful reproduction of the Colt mechanism has been addressed by a new two-piece rebound lever made of a sturdy pressed and die-cast part, preventing misalignment over the long term. The grip also features a pressed weight, and the exterior has been updated with anti-reflective grooves on the front and rear sights, anti-slip serrations on the trigger, faithfully recreating the details of the 2nd Type from 1946 onwards, which is commonly associated with the Colt Detective.
A "Steel Finish Model" has been added to the "R-model" variations. Not only have the barrel, frame, and trigger been re-plated, but the hammer color has been changed to a gray steel finish and the sides have been polished to resemble the original finish. The Detective Special is considered a masterpiece of compact double-action revolvers in Colt's history, which has contributed greatly to the evolution of revolvers.
