Overview:
The XM177E2 (Colt Commando Model 629) is a short-barreled carbine in the M16 series developed by Colt in the late 1960s, adopted for use by US special forces during the Vietnam War. It is commonly known as the "XM177E2" or "CAR-15" and is considered the precursor to the modern M4 carbine.
At the time, the M16A1's long overall length posed handling challenges in jungle warfare and helicopter-borne mobile operations. To improve portability and maneuverability, the XM177E2 was developed with a barrel shortened to 11.5 inches. Early XM177E1 models had issues with muzzle flash, noise, and operability, but the XM177E2 addressed these by incorporating a large "Moderator" to suppress muzzle flash and sound, and improve operational stability.
Key external features include a slim handguard, a two-position aluminum telescoping stock, and the long, distinctive moderator. The basic structure is shared with the M16A1, using 5.56×45mm ammunition and supporting semi-automatic and full-automatic firing. Its lightweight and compact design made it excellent for operations in confined spaces and dense jungle.
The XM177E2 was widely used by MACV-SOG, US Army Special Forces (Green Berets), Navy SEALs, Air Force Special Forces, and helicopter crew members, earning a high reputation as a special forces carbine emblematic of the Vietnam War. Due to its historical background and unique style, it remains highly popular among military enthusiasts and airsoft fans today, and is remembered as the "ancestor of the modern M4 carbine."
