Tactical Evolution of the 1911 = High Capacity

Since the 1980s, high-capacity 1911 automatics, which developed as race guns for competitive shooting, have undergone further tactical updates and are now attracting attention as the hottest duty guns.

Currently, starting with the SOG team of the U.S. Marshals, a special unit of the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 280 law enforcement agencies nationwide, including LAPD SWAT and Texas Rangers, have adopted or authorized high-capacity 1911s as standard equipment.

The reason why high-capacity (or double-stack) frames are chosen for duty use is that they can achieve a high capacity of 14 rounds for .45 caliber ammunition and over 18 rounds for .38 caliber ammunition, while still maintaining the proven excellent operability and reliability of the 1911.

Another Double Stack 1911 = Widebody

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a double-stack 1911 is probably the modular frame developed by TRI (Tripp Research Inc, the predecessor of STI) around 1993.

The modular frame is characterized by a structure in which a reinforced resin frame, including the trigger guard and grip, is integrated with a metal chassis called a subframe.

In the United States, double-stack 1911s with this structure are generally referred to as "2011" (although "2011" is originally a trademark of STI, now Staccato 2011, LLC).

And categorized differently from these are double-stack 1911s called "widebody."

The widebody 1911 was developed by PARA-Ordnance (hereinafter Para-Ordnance), established in Ontario, Canada, in 1985.

At the time, the firearms market was advocating for higher capacity automatic handguns, triggered by trials for a new official U.S. military pistol.

This trend, known as the "Wonder Nine," referred to the development of handguns equipped with double-stack magazines capable of holding at least 15 rounds of 9mm x 19 ammunition, which was adopted as the NATO standard loading method in 1962.

Ted Szabo, one of the owners of Para-Ordnance and an enthusiast of the 1911 pistol, embarked on the idea of combining the concept of the Wonder Nine with the tradition of the 1911, invented by the great John M. Browning.

In 1988, Para-Ordnance announced a kit consisting of a widebody 1911 frame and double-stack magazine that could be retrofitted with existing 1911 slide assemblies.

The frame of this kit was made of light alloy to avoid increasing the weight of the gun body, and the grip, including the panel, was only 1/8 inch thicker, which was an excellent design.

After approximately two years of product development, the Para-Ordnance 13-shot .45 kit was introduced to the market, and several years later, the company announced its first complete pistol, the P14.45.

Jet Black Double Stack 1911 Black OPS

Para-Ordnance relocated its base to Pineville, North Carolina, in 2009, and later became Para USA, a wholly American company. (It has since been acquired by Freedom Group, a conglomerate of firearms-related companies.)

The Black OPS, released under the Para USA brand, as its name suggests, was produced as a variation with tactical objectives in mind.

The slide, inheriting the traditional design of the 1911, features wide, machined cocking serrations not only at the rear but also at the front, creating a tactical appearance and providing practical usability for easy operation even with gloved hands.

The dovetailed front sight is a white dot type. Combined with the low-mount tactical rear sight, it provides an excellent sight picture.

The Novak-style rear sight mounted at the rear, with its uniquely voluminous shape, is an excellent tactical sight that minimizes deformation even if dropped and has a snag-free form that prevents it from getting caught on clothing as much as possible.

The aluminum machined bushing-type barrel is equipped with an M14 thread (clockwise) for direct suppressor attachment without the need for adapters.

The barrel itself is made of lightweight aluminum machining to reduce the impact of slide operation when a suppressor is attached. A thread protector is included to protect the M14 thread when it is not in use as an attachment.

The steel full-length guide rod parallel to the barrel assists in the reliable expansion and contraction of the recoil spring while achieving a top-heavy balance.

Customization Points for the Frame Assembly

One of the charms of the Para-Ordnance widebody is its traditional form, which is a double-stack version that retains the design of the Colt 1911.

The Picatinny rail, reproduced as a robust separate metal part on the dust cover of the frame, is a regular length with three slots, which is currently standard, and can accommodate any size of attached equipment.

The frame side condenses custom parts required for professional use, boasting high operability as a tactical gun.

The ambidextrous extended thumb safety, operable from both left and right sides, has a red dot at its base to indicate whether the safety is on or off.

The hammer adopts a ring-shaped skeletonized hammer for faster lock time. The high-ride grip safety is designed to prevent injury to the base of the thumb from the hammer when gripping the gun in a high position, and it has a memory bump at the bottom, providing high operability that allows the grip safety to be disengaged unconsciously.

The match-grade trigger, which incorporates an adjustment screw, uses thoroughly lightweight resin parts.

High-Grade Specification with G10 Grips as Standard

The blacked-out left and right grip panels adopt custom G10 grips specifically manufactured for this model.

G10 material is an artificial material made by compressing and hardening fiberglass and epoxy resin under high pressure, and it is favored for grips of real firearms and knives due to its excellent durability and water resistance.

The panel surface has a composite anti-slip pattern, and the reliable grip unique to G10 material provides a firm grip and authentic feel.
