The VSS Vintorez is a special sniper rifle developed by the Soviet Union's Central Research Institute for Precision Machine Building (TsNIITochMash) in the 1980s, chambered for 9x39mm subsonic ammunition. Since 1987, it has been deployed to special forces such as the Soviet Army, KGB, GRU, and Spetsnaz, and was developed for special missions requiring stealth and high penetration, such as covert operations, reconnaissance missions, and counter-terrorism operations. It is a sibling to the AS VAL, developed at the same time, and shares many parts, achieving high maintainability and operational efficiency.

The VSS's greatest feature is its integrated suppressor combined with 9x39mm subsonic ammunition. The ported barrel and integral suppressor significantly reduce firing sound and muzzle flash, achieving high stealth. In addition, by using dedicated SP-5 precision rounds and SP-6 armor-piercing rounds, it demonstrates excellent penetration against targets wearing ballistic protection and boasts high accuracy at an effective range of approximately 400m.

It employs a long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt operating system, providing high operational reliability even in harsh environments. While typically firing semi-automatically with 10-round magazines, it can also fire in full-auto when needed, allowing for close-quarters emergency combat. In addition to the standard PSO-1-1 scope, iron sights can also be used, and the wooden skeleton stock provides excellent portability and handling for a sniper rifle.

The VSS Vintorez, as a special sniper rifle combining high stealth, excellent accuracy, and high penetration performance due to its special ammunition, continues to be operated by special forces in Russia and other countries.
