The FN SCAR-L (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle - Light) is a modular assault rifle chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, developed by FN Herstal in Belgium based on requirements from the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). It emerged from the SCAR program initiated in the early 2000s, designed as a next-generation rifle offering high reliability, durability, accuracy, and excellent modularity. The SCAR series includes the 5.56mm SCAR-L (Light) and the 7.62mm SCAR-H (Heavy), both designed with high parts commonality to streamline operation and maintenance.

The SCAR-L employs a short-stroke gas piston system and a rotating bolt, ensuring reliable operation even in harsh environments. A key feature is that combustion gases are less likely to enter the internal mechanism compared to AR platforms, which helps prevent malfunctions caused by fouling. Additionally, the adoption of an aluminum monolithic receiver and a free-floating barrel contributes to high rigidity and excellent accuracy. Lightweight and easy to handle, it is designed for a wide range of missions, from special operations to general infantry use.

Its most notable feature is its high modularity. It allows for the exchange of barrels of different lengths depending on the application, and comes standard with a multi-functional stock featuring folding, telescoping, and cheekpiece adjustment capabilities. Furthermore, the upper receiver and handguard are equipped with Picatinny rails, allowing for the attachment of various accessories such as optical sights, weapon lights, laser sights, and foregrips. This enables flexible setup tailored to mission requirements and operating environments.
