Real Steel Overview:
The AKMS is a folding stock model of the AKM, designed by Soviet engineer Mikhail Kalashnikov, and was adopted in 1959 alongside the AKM. The "S" in its name stands for "Skladnoy" (folding) in Russian, indicating it was developed for units requiring high portability, such as airborne troops, armored units, and vehicle crews. While retaining the excellent reliability and durability of the AKM, the adoption of a metal underfolding stock significantly improved its portability and storability.

Like the AKM, the AKMS uses a long-stroke gas piston system and a rotating bolt, firing 7.62x39mm rounds. The stamped receiver, inherited from the AK-47, achieved weight reduction and mass productivity, while the adoption of a slanted muzzle brake and improved trigger mechanism enhanced control during full-auto firing and operational reliability. Its simple structure maintained excellent maintainability, demonstrating high reliability even in harsh environments such as mud, dust, and low temperatures.

The most distinctive feature, the underfolding stock, provides sufficient rigidity during use and can be folded under the gun body for storage, shortening its overall length. This allows for excellent maneuverability in scenarios like airborne drops, carrying in vehicles and armored personnel carriers, and operating in confined spaces such as urban areas. Another feature is the revised structure from the AKS-47, which improved manufacturing efficiency and durability.

The AKMS, combining the high reliability of the AKM, the excellent stopping power of the 7.62x39mm round, and high portability, was widely adopted by the Soviet military, Warsaw Pact member states, and various countries worldwide. Its design philosophy was inherited by subsequent folding AK series like the AKS-74, and it remains one of the classic AK models, highly popular in military history, collections, and airsoft.
