Real Steel Overview:
The AK-74 is an assault rifle developed by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) in the Soviet Union and officially adopted in 1974, firing 5.45×39mm ammunition. It was developed as a successor to the conventional AKM, and by adopting a small-caliber high-velocity round, it reduced recoil and significantly improved accuracy and control during continuous firing. Inheriting the high reliability traditional to the AK series, while achieving the firing performance required for modern warfare, it has been operated as the main rifle of the Soviet and Russian armies for many years.

The operating system employs the traditional AK series long-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt, demonstrating excellent operational reliability even in harsh environments such as mud, dust, and low temperatures. The newly adopted 5.45×39mm ammunition has less recoil and superior ballistic characteristics compared to the conventional 7.62×39mm ammunition, thereby improving accuracy during full-auto firing and increasing the number of rounds carried. Furthermore, the standard large muzzle brake and compensator effectively suppress recoil and muzzle rise, achieving excellent firing control performance.

Early models featured wooden stocks and handguards, but in later production, these were changed to resin parts for improved durability and weather resistance. Additionally, features such as a chrome-plated barrel and chamber, and a 30-round polymer magazine were adopted, further enhancing durability and maintainability. A 40mm grenade launcher, such as the GP-25, can be mounted under the barrel, providing high versatility.

The AK-74 was first deployed in combat during the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979, proving its high reliability and excellent accuracy. It later became the foundation for the development of the AKS-74 with a folding stock, the modernized AK-74M, and further the AK-100 series. It is still highly regarded worldwide as a masterpiece representing the Kalashnikov series, combining the robustness of the AKM with the advantages of small-caliber high-velocity ammunition.
