Real Steel Overview:
The AKS-74U is a compact carbine chambered in 5.45x39mm developed in the late 1970s by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) in the Soviet Union. It is a significantly shortened version of the AK-74, with the "U" in its designation meaning "shortened" (Ukorochennyy) in Russian. Adopted in 1979, it was issued to units requiring high mobility, such as airborne troops, special forces, and tank and armored vehicle crews.

Its basic structure incorporates the traditional AK-series long-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt, ensuring high operational reliability even in harsh environments like mud, dust, and low temperatures. The gas system and a dedicated flash hider were newly designed to accommodate the barrel, which was shortened to approximately 206mm, suppressing any decrease in operation due to the shorter barrel and muzzle flash. It uses the same 5.45x39mm ammunition as the AK-74, and despite its compact size, it boasts greater power and range than a submachine gun.

The exterior features a metal stock that folds to the left, allowing it to be shortened to approximately 490mm when carried. Later models adopted polymer handguards and pistol grips, improving both lightness and durability. Additionally, some models were equipped with a side-mount rail on the left side of the receiver, allowing for the attachment of optical sights and night vision devices.

While the AKS-74U has a shorter effective range and lower muzzle velocity compared to a full-size AK, its excellent portability and reliability have led to its long-term use by military and law enforcement agencies in the Soviet Union/Russia and various countries worldwide. It is also widely known in the West by the nickname "Krinkov" and remains highly popular as a representative compact AK. Its design philosophy has also been carried over to successors like the AK-105, solidifying its reputation as a legendary firearm that significantly influenced the development of modern AK carbines.
