The M4 RIS Carbine is a modernized version of the M4 carbine developed by Colt in the US, equipped with a Rail Interface System (RIS) manufactured by Knight's Armament Company (KAC). Introduced to the US military in the late 1990s, it achieved high expandability by adopting a RIS with a 4-sided Picatinny rail, replacing the conventional plastic handguard. This allowed for the attachment of optical sights, laser sights, weapon lights, foregrips, and other accessories according to mission requirements, establishing it as a foundational model for modern modular weapon systems.

The base M4 carbine, developed from the M16A2, is a 5.56×45mm NATO assault carbine that achieves excellent portability and mobility with a 14.5-inch barrel and a 6-position adjustable stock. It uses a direct impingement operating system, combining a lightweight structure with high accuracy. Despite its compact size, it has sufficient firepower and can handle a wide range of missions, including urban warfare, vehicle operations, and special operations, leading to its widespread adoption by the US military and other countries worldwide.

With the adoption of the RIS, the M4 gained high versatility, allowing for flexible combinations of equipment necessary for each mission.
