King of Military and Police Pistols: The Colt Government

On March 29, 1911, Colt's new large-caliber military pistol was officially adopted by the U.S. Army as the M1911.

After being deployed in combat during World War I, the M1911 underwent improvements to its external parts between 1924 and 1926. This improved version, named the A1, was then distributed to the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.

Colt bestowed the title "Government Model" upon this perfected .45 automatic pistol and introduced it to the civilian market, where it achieved great success.

In 1985, the Colt Government ceded its position as the standard U.S. military pistol to the 9mm Beretta M9. However, the superior design and overwhelming man-stopping power of the .45 caliber, which had protected the U.S. for over 70 years, continued to command a timeless trust. It is said that the Marine Corps and Army Special Forces continued to operate Government models independently.

Even today, customized guns with updated Government designs are adopted by renowned law enforcement agencies, starting with the Special Operations Group (SOG) formed as the SWAT unit of the U.S. Marshals Service under the Department of Justice, as well as the FBI, LAPD SWAT, and Texas Rangers. Alongside the latest polymer-framed next-generation handguns, the time-tested spirit of the .45 auto continues to be inherited.

The Mk (Mark) 4 Series 70 was produced for the civilian market from 1970 to 1983 and is considered a flagship model of Colt during a period of highly stable quality. Its popularity is evident from the fact that reproduction models are still released even after production ceased.

The simple yet well-balanced slide and frame, seemingly free of unnecessary ornamentation unlike modern tactical customs, are crafted using ample carbon black heavy-weight material (hereafter HW), which is renowned for its weight and texture.

The right side of the slide reproduces the roll mark (engraving) of the 1970s specifications, considered to be the most balanced and excellent. The left side is simple, yet proudly engraved with the GOVERNMENT MODEL marking, a designation exclusive to Colt products.

Classic style parts such as the short trigger with wide serrations, spur hammer, and minimalist thumb safety lever, which are rarely seen in 1911 clones from other manufacturers today, are also a unique charm of the Colt Government.

Another appealing feature is the use of metal parts such as a machined brass outer barrel with chrome plating, a steel plug and recoil spring guide, and a solidly polished metal chamber cover, achieving a weighty feel in hand that evokes the sensation of a real firearm.

Superior Blued (Blackened) Finish

The HW slides and frames are blast-shot to achieve a matte texture, then the sides of the slides are polished.

This emphasizes the contrast between the curved surfaces of the matte finish and the glossy flat surfaces of the slide, creating a realistic, three-dimensional texture.
