Developed for the 2016 US military's selection of a new military pistol (XM17 MHS competition), FN Herstal's latest pistol, the FN 509, is a polymer-framed striker-fired pistol that is an improved version of the FNS, a derivative of the company's highly acclaimed FNX.
The FN509 is based on the structure of the FNS Compact, so the general aspects such as the exterior silhouette are similar to the FNS.
However, in order to meet the strict performance requirements of the MHS, the FN509 was developed with the advice of former Delta Force officer Larry Vickers in the early stages of development, and changes were made to various internal and external parts, with its performance thoroughly tested throughout the development process, making it an undeniably evolved model.
A number of prestigious manufacturers, including SIG, Glock, and Beretta, participated in the XM17 MHS competition, and the SIG P320 (M17/M18) was ultimately selected.However, it has been pointed out that one of the reasons the P320 was selected was its low procurement cost, and the FN509, which lost, also has performance that is comparable to that of the P320.
This is the world's first GBB model, and it's an officially licensed EMG model, so the size and engravings are meticulously reproduced, and the quality control is rigorous.
This gun is not a standard FN509, but a gas blowback version of the FN509 Tactical, equipped with a threaded barrel for a silencer and an optical mounting system. The FN509 Tactical is a model based on specifications submitted to the US military's MHS trial. (Strictly speaking, the MHS requirements also included color requirements, so the FDE color is the original trial specification.)
The front and rear sights are high-profile, designed to accommodate a dot sight mounted on the slide, allowing sighting even without the dots illuminating. Standard front and rear sights are also included, allowing for customization. The sights are a replica of the Trijicon sights used on the actual rifle, with a green rear dot and a red front dot for excellent visibility.
The footprint of the red dot sight mount is the Trijicon RMR standard, but the actual product is compatible with more than 10 different footprints. A slide cap for use when not mounting a red dot sight is also included, just like the original.
The ergonomic grip features a variety of non-slip patterns, and interchangeable backstraps allow for customization to suit the shooter. The controls, including the slide release and magazine catch, are fully ambidextrous, making them suitable for all hand sizes and dominant hands.
