Product Description

S&W M27 "The .357 Magnum" 4-inch Steel Finish

In 1935, a legendary firearm was born: the "S&W The .357 Magnum," commonly known as the "Registered Magnum." This was the genesis of the model that would later be called the "S&W M27" when the model number system was introduced. The ".357 Magnum cartridge," which still exists today, was also developed at this time.
Upon its release, it was advertised as "the most powerful revolver in the world." This high-powered handgun was not only popular among general gun enthusiasts but was also eagerly purchased by law enforcement officers.
However, as the name "Registered" suggests, initial sales were not to the general public. Instead, they were custom-ordered, bespoke items that came with a registration certificate that also served as a quality guarantee. While customers could meticulously select everything from the sights, barrel length in ¼-inch increments, finish, and grips, this custom-order system reportedly limited monthly production to about 120 units initially. Yet, thousands of orders poured in, much to S&W's delighted dismay.
Production was temporarily halted during World War II but resumed for a redesigned model after the war. Demand for the post-war "The .357 Magnum" remained high, but the issue of its price became a significant burden. While a more affordable version, "The Highway Patrolman" (later the M28), which omitted some finishing details, was introduced, the reliability and demand for "The .357 Magnum" remained strong. When the model number system began in 1957, the custom-order system with its countless combinations was streamlined, and the "Registered" system was abolished.
Even with streamlined variations and increased efficiency, unlike the more affordable M28, this model retained the luxurious specifications inherited from the Registered Magnum. This included the traditional rear sight base and anti-glare checkering on the top surface from the frame to the barrel rib.

This time, we have modeled the 4-inch version, which was added in 1979 when the 3-½-inch and 5-inch models were discontinued, in a steel finish.

The steel-colored frame and barrel, reminiscent of the actual firearms of the era, are richly reproduced with plating. It faithfully replicates distinctive details such as the tapered 4-inch barrel, the checkering applied from the frame to the barrel including the rear sight base, as well as the counter-bored cylinder, semi-wide hammer, and narrow trigger. Additionally, the trigger and hammer feature a case-hardened-like finish, recreating the luxurious appearance of the period.

It uses ".357 Magnum" cartridges. The internal mechanism complies with the latest Version 2 of the S&W N-frame model gun series, achieving a level of perfection befitting a high-end model, not only in its appearance but also in its operation, including a smooth trigger feel.

The appeal of traditional steel color, revived with modern technology. This is a piece worthy of the name "The .357 Magnum," possessing a dignified presence that can be enjoyed as a centerpiece of your collection for many years to come.
