Overview:
The XM177E1 (Colt Model 609) was the first full-fledged military short carbine in the M16 series developed by Colt in 1966, and is an important model that led to the later XM177E2 and modern M4 carbine. It was developed in response to the demand from helicopter crew members, special forces, and long-range reconnaissance units during the Vietnam War for "lighter and more maneuverable small arms."

Based on the M16A1, the XM177E1 significantly reduced size and weight by shortening the barrel to approximately 10 inches and adopting an aluminum 2-position telescopic stock. This provided excellent portability in confined spaces such as jungle warfare, vehicles, and aircraft. It also featured an advanced design that quickly incorporated the concept of a telescopic stock, which is still used in current M4 carbines.

A major external feature is the large moderator attached to the muzzle. This device was not merely a flash hider, but also played a role in reducing the muzzle flash and muzzle report increased by the shortened barrel, and assisting in operation. However, the extremely short 10-inch barrel could not completely solve problems such as noise, muzzle flash, and reduced muzzle velocity during firing, and further improvements were demanded during actual combat operations.

As a result, the XM177E2 appeared in 1967, with the barrel extended to 11.5 inches to improve reliability and firing performance. Although the XM177E1 itself had a relatively short adoption period, it is highly regarded as the starting point for the development of M16-based short carbines. It symbolizes the equipment of special forces during the Vietnam War and is a historical model that is still highly popular among military enthusiasts and collectors.
