Overview:
The M16A1 is a modified version of the M16 series, which militarized the AR-15 designed by American engineer Eugene Stoner. It is a historic assault rifle adopted as the official service rifle of the U.S. military in 1967. Known as the iconic service rifle of the Vietnam War, it is highly regarded as the model that laid the foundation for modern AR platforms such as the later M16A2 and M4 Carbine.

At the time, the U.S. military was operating the M14, which used 7.62mm ammunition, but its weight and heavy recoil were issues. The M16A1 adopted the 5.56×45mm small-caliber, high-velocity round and achieved significant weight reduction by combining a lightweight aluminum alloy receiver with a polymer stock. Soldiers could carry more ammunition and achieved high rates of fire and excellent accuracy.

While the early M16 suffered from malfunctions in the harsh environment of Vietnam, the M16A1 underwent many improvements, including the addition of a forward assist, chrome plating of the chamber and barrel, and the provision of maintenance manuals and cleaning kits. This greatly improved its reliability, and it came to be widely used by many units, including the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.

Its external features include a 20-inch barrel, fixed stock, triangular handguard, and a receiver integrated with a carrying handle. This classic style remains highly popular and is the motif for many reproduction models and airsoft guns.

The M16A1 is not only a representative military rifle of the Vietnam War but also a groundbreaking existence that established the design philosophy inherited by the modern AR-15 and M4 series.
