During the Iraq War, which began in 2003, attacks using explosives such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) increased, and consequently, the number of soldiers sustaining eye injuries rapidly rose. Military doctors, while struggling to treat the wounded, noticed that among the injured soldiers, there were some who had sustained extensive body injuries from explosions but whose eyes remained unharmed.
