Real Steel Overview:
The AK-74 is an assault rifle developed by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) in the Soviet Union and officially adopted in 1974, chambered in 5.45x39mm. It was born as the successor to the conventional AKM, and by adopting a small-caliber, high-velocity round, it reduced recoil and significantly improved accuracy and control performance during rapid fire. While inheriting the traditional high reliability of the AK series, it has been operated as the main rifle of the Soviet and Russian armies for many years as a model that achieved the shooting performance required in modern warfare.

It employs the traditional long-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt of the AK series for its operating mechanism, demonstrating excellent operational reliability even in harsh environments such as mud, dust, and low temperatures. The newly adopted 5.45x39mm round has less recoil and superior ballistic characteristics compared to the conventional 7.62x39mm round, resulting in improved accuracy during full-auto firing and an increase in the number of rounds carried. Additionally, it comes standard with a large muzzle brake and compensator, effectively suppressing recoil and muzzle jump, achieving excellent shooting control performance.

Early models featured wooden stocks and handguards, but in later production, these were changed to more durable and weather-resistant polymer parts. Furthermore, the chrome-plated barrel and chamber, along with the adoption of 30-round polymer magazines, improved durability and ease of maintenance. A 40mm grenade launcher such as the GP-25 can be attached under the barrel, providing high versatility.

The AK-74 was first used in combat during the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979, proving its high reliability and excellent accuracy. It later became the foundation for the development of the AKS-74 with a folding stock, the modernized AK-74M, and further the AK-100 series. Fusing the robustness of the AKM with the advantages of small-caliber, high-velocity ammunition, it is still highly regarded worldwide as a masterpiece representing the Kalashnikov series.
