During the Iraq War, which began in 2003, attacks by explosive devices such as improvised explosive devices increased, and consequently, the number of soldiers with eye injuries rapidly surged. While struggling with this situation, military doctors who continued to treat the wounded noticed that among the injured, there were soldiers who had sustained extensive body injuries from explosions but whose eyes remained unscathed. The military doctors launched an investigation, and the result revealed that many of the soldiers without eye injuries were wearing WILEY X® SG-1, which they had purchased with their own money, rather than the military-issued eyewear.
In response to this finding, the U.S. military rapidly supplied SG-1 to soldiers at an unprecedented pace. As a result, the number of soldiers suffering eye injuries significantly decreased.
This overwhelming safety performance earned the SG-1 the praise of "Legend" (legendary equipment, despite being a newly issued item) from the soldiers.
