Delta Force, the Strongest Special Forces Unit

Delta Force is known as one of the US military's premier special mission units. However, the unit's existence has never been officially confirmed by the US government, and all public information regarding its existence is said to be based on testimony from former members.

Most of the missions Delta Force has undertaken in the past remain classified, and even the unit's name has varied at times, including Combat Applications Group (CAG), Army Compartmented Element (ACE), Task Force Green, or simply "The Unit."

Its official name is now the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), and its history is relatively new in the US military. It was established in 1977 as a top-tier counter-terrorism unit, equivalent to the British Army's 22 Special Air Service (SAS), as the threat of terrorism spread globally.

Delta Force is often featured in movies and games these days, but for gun enthusiasts like us, the flexibility in choosing weapons due to the special nature of its missions is likely to be appealing. One such weapon was the custom-made .45 Auto, dubbed the "Delta 1911."

The 1911 .45 automatic, sometimes generically referred to as the Colt Government in Japan, was adopted as the official US military pistol, starting with the Army under the name M1911 in 1911, before World War I.

The M1911 was updated to the improved A1 model and continued to be used through World War II and up to the Vietnam War, but as is well known, it was replaced by the 9mm Beretta M9 as the official service pistol in 1985.

However, due to the stopping power of the .45 ACP round and the effectiveness of first-shot accuracy provided by the cock-and-lock single-action mechanism (which allows the hammer to be cocked and held with the safety on), some units continued to use the 1911, and Delta Force was one of them.

The unique aspect of Delta Force was that each member was issued two 1911s and allowed to customize them freely according to their preferences.

The customization of the 1911s was reportedly carried out by unit armorers within the force, and Larry Vickers, a former Delta Force member and a prominent figure in the US firearms community, was one of the individuals deeply involved in the construction of the Delta 1911. His book "Vickers Guide" offers a glimpse into its concept.

Custom Features of the Delta 1911 Slide

The slide, with its traditional 5-inch barrel length, features block-shaped cocking serrations at both the front and rear, providing practical usability for easy operation even with gloved hands, while also creating a tactical appearance.

The front sight is equipped with a fiber optic that glows green in light, offering excellent sight picture.

A distinctive feature of the rear sight is the inclusion of a fully adjustable Bomar sight, despite being a tactical gun. However, it's worth noting that it's mounted lower and slightly further forward than competition sights to reduce snagging on clothing and prevent damage, a consideration for its intended use.

The traditional straight barrel, combined with a thick barrel bushing, is crafted from blacked-out, machined aluminum with weight reduction in mind to minimize the impact of slide movement. The metal chamber cover, a reproduction of the Kart Precision Barrel, has a blued finish.

The steel full-length guide rod, parallel to the barrel, helps achieve a top-heavy balance while assisting the reliable compression and expansion of the recoil spring.

The lower end of the ejection port is deeply scooped out, and a case rollover notch has been added.

Custom Features of the Delta 1911 Frame

The integral Picatinny rail on the frame's dust cover was an early adoption of equipment at the time and is said to have significantly influenced the current mainstream tactical guns.

The ambidextrous thumb safety can be operated from both sides, but the fact that the right-side lever's mounting method does not interfere with the grip panels is a choice unique to military operation, considering the frequent need to change grip panels under harsh usage conditions.

A robust magwell with a widely flared magazine opening is attached to the bottom of the frame, ensuring quick magazine changes.

Although Burner grips with aggressive anti-slip texture were reportedly preferred for the Delta 1911's grip panels, WA has reproduced these as full metal parts. This achieves a reliable grip feel and a weighty feel of over one kilogram in hand.

Standard Equipment: Wilson Combat Long Magazine

The Wilson Combat long magazine has been confirmed for use by some units within the US military as an item to compensate for the limited capacity, which is a weak point of single-stack (single-column) 1911s.

This magazine is highly regarded by law enforcement agencies for its low incidence of feeding problems. In the case of gas blowback guns, it not only increases the ammunition capacity but also adds to the internal gas tank volume.

This not only increases the amount of gas injected but also has the effect of increasing the heat capacity within the gas tank, making it an excellent item with a strong structure against cooling, which is the nemesis of gas guns.

Although the .45 ACP round was once deified as a military cartridge, current law enforcement agencies have moved from the era of the more powerful .40 S&W round to the era of high-performance 9mm Parabellum rounds.

Nevertheless, a properly customized 1911 .45 Auto, when handled by a professional with advanced training and corresponding knowledge, allows for the fastest and most reliable neutralization of targets.

Slide and Frame Maintenance

The surface finish of the Carbon Black Heavyweight material prioritizes the texture that brings out the material's character and does not undergo painting, coating, or other treatments.

Therefore, unlike painted finishes, the alloy powder layer mixed into the material is exposed, and may oxidize or discolor due to age or frequency of use.

After use, we recommend regular maintenance, such as wiping off dirt (like hand oils) adhering to the material surface with a separately sold silicone spray.
