Product Description

SMOLT Revolver 4inch Square Butt Stainless Finish Ver.3

In the 1970s, Smith & Wesson's .357 Magnum revolvers did not feature a full underlug barrel with a weight. In contrast, its rival, the Colt Python, boasted superior barrel machining precision and the significant advantage of reducing muzzle rise during firing due to the added weight of its underlug. Furthermore, the Python was highly regarded for its strong rifling spin, which provided excellent straight-line stability by imparting sufficient spin to the bullet.
However, while the Python's trigger action was exceptionally smooth, it also made it difficult to anticipate the precise moment the hammer would fall. Conversely, S&W's action was often considered superior in terms of trigger control, making it natural for competitive shooters and gunsmiths to conceive the idea of combining the best features of both.
This led to the birth of the ultimate hybrid revolver—the "Smolt." Among them, the works of master craftsman Bill Davis of California are particularly well-known. His intricate early creations, which locked the tip of the ejector rod instead of the more common method of installing a locking ball on the yoke side, are now extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors.
The Smolt was essentially a custom-order model, where users would bring in their S&W K-frame and specify the desired length of the Python barrel to be fitted. The Smolt previously released by Tanaka was based on a round-butt K-frame, but after its release, we received numerous requests from long-time fans for a "square-butt version."
Therefore, we have produced a square-butt version of the Smolt. Going beyond just a different frame, we have also changed to a wide hammer and wide trigger, and fitted an oversized grip. This model is finished to strongly evoke the classical atmosphere of yesteryear. Furthermore, this stainless-finish model is configured based on the M66. Not only the frame and barrel, but also the aforementioned trigger and hammer, have a stainless-steel finish.
This piece combines practicality and presence at a high level, while reminiscing about custom guns of the past. The stainless finish embodies the new appeal of the Smolt, where classical design and the unique texture of stainless steel stand out, equipped with the latest Ver.3 mechanism for K-frames, making its debut as a model gun.
(*In Japan, it has long been known as "SMYTHSON," but in the US, it has been called "SMOLT," a combination of the manufacturer names. With the latest Ver.3 update, the model name has also been unified to "SMOLT.")
