During the Iraq War, which began in 2003, attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) increased, and consequently, the number of soldiers sustaining eye injuries rapidly rose. Grappling with this situation, military doctors who continued to treat the wounded noticed that among the injured, there were soldiers who had extensive body injuries from explosions but completely unharmed eyes. The military doctors launched an investigation and discovered that many of the soldiers whose eyes were uninjured were not wearing military eyewear issued by the military, but rather SG-1s from WILEY X® that they had purchased at their own expense.
Following these findings, the U.S. military rapidly issued SG-1s to soldiers, an unprecedented move. As a result, the number of soldiers sustaining eye injuries significantly decreased.
