Real Steel Overview:
The AK-74M is a 5.45x39mm assault rifle developed in 1991 by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) in Russia. It is a modernized and improved model of the AK-74 adopted in 1974, and is still widely used as the standard rifle of the Russian military. It also served as the basic design for the later AK-100 series.
Its basic structure incorporates the traditional long-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt of the AK series, demonstrating high reliability in harsh environments such as mud, dust, and low temperatures. The adoption of the 5.45x39mm round reduces recoil compared to the AKM, which uses the 7.62x39mm round, improving control and accuracy during full-auto fire. The combination of a 415mm barrel and a large muzzle brake provides stable shooting performance with suppressed muzzle rise.
The AK-74M also saw significant external changes from previous models. Instead of fixed or metal folding stocks, it adopted a durable polymer side-folding stock. The handguard and pistol grip are also made of polymer, reducing weight and improving weather resistance. Furthermore, a side mount rail is standard on the left side of the receiver, allowing easy attachment of various optical sights and night vision devices, addressing the expandability required in modern warfare.
Maintaining the high maintainability and excellent durability of its simple structure, the AK-74M significantly improved operability and practicality. It has been adopted by the Russian military and many law enforcement agencies, earning high reliability through actual combat. Its high level of completeness made it the foundation for the AK-100 series, which evolved into the AK-101, AK-103, and AK-105, and is highly regarded as the origin of modern Russian-made AKs.
