The Colt M653 (Model 653) is a 5.56×45mm NATO carbine developed by Colt in the United States in the 1970s, based on the M16A1. It was created by evolving the concept of a compact M16 established with the XM177 series, aiming to improve shooting performance and practicality while maintaining excellent mobility. It is one of the important models in the development history of the M16 carbine, leading to the later Model 723 and M4 carbine.

Its most distinctive feature is its configuration, combining an A1 receiver with a fixed carrying handle of the M16A1 type with a 14.5-inch slender pencil barrel. While the XM177E2 adopted an 11.5-inch barrel and a large moderator, the M653 used a 14.5-inch barrel and an A1-type birdcage flash hider. This achieved more stable ballistic performance while maintaining the maneuverability characteristic of a carbine. It also features the simple style emblematic of early M16 carbines, such as a forward assist, slender handguard, and adjustable stock.

The M653 is a Colt internal model number and not an official U.S. military designation, but it was used by special operations units and exported overseas. In Japan, it is also known as the "Barnes Model" because Sergeant Barnes and others used it in the movie "Platoon," although the M653 was not actually used in the Vietnam War and was procured for the film's production.

The M653, which fuses the classic design of the M16A1 with the mobility unique to a carbine, remains highly popular today as a symbol of the evolutionary process from the XM177 to the later M4.
