The M10 Military & Police (M&P), chambered in .38spl ammunition, has spawned numerous derivative models throughout its long history. In 1947, the K-38 Target Masterpiece, featuring a 6-inch barrel and a movable rear sight, was released to critical acclaim. The K-38 Combat Masterpiece, based on this revolver but with a shortened 4-inch barrel, was born in response to requests from the FBI and other organizations. The "K-38" designation refers to the frame size K and the .38spl specification. After the war, it was given the model number "M15," and was widely used by the U.S. Air Force, FBI, and state police forces until the late 1980s, when the transition to automatic pistols took hold. As the "Masterpiece" name suggests, it became S&W's signature "military and police revolver."
This model was created in response to popular demand. The slender, rugged, tapered barrel, specifically designed for the .38spl, lacks a shroud covering the ejector rod, preventing snagging when withdrawing from a holster. It features a later-standard angled front sight and a low, dedicated rear sight blade. The trigger features anti-slip serrations, and the hammer is semi-wide, reflecting the frequent cocking and aiming of the rifle. Another notable feature is the reproduction of the .38spl-specific yoke and cylinder. Other features include a diamond-checkered flat-bottom grip, barrel locking pin, and a large SW mark on the side plate, recreating the early 1967 model.
