The Commander: The Origin of the 1911 Carry Gun

"Commander" is the name given to a commercial model developed by Colt as a lighter and shorter-barreled version of the Government.

The prototype of the Commander was developed by Colt in 1949 after World War II at the request of the US military, as a new pistol using 9mm ammunition in accordance with NATO standards.

The purpose of this development was to create a lighter model that was easier to handle than the M1911. The US military's requirements were that the overall length should not exceed 7 inches and the weight should not exceed 25 ounces.

Therefore, Colt developed a prototype model that achieved lighter weight and smaller size by adopting an aluminum alloy frame and a 4.25-inch short slide.

Although this model was not officially adopted, it was released to the civilian market in 1950 under the name Colt Commander and attracted attention as the first mass-produced US firearm to use an aluminum frame.

At the time, there was a trend to question the durability of aluminum frames, so Colt announced a new model in 1970 that changed the frame material to steel. This model was named "Combat Commander" and introduced to the market.

This platform has been inherited to the present day. While 1911 clones with a 5-inch barrel are called full-size, carry models with a shortened barrel in the 4-inch class are referred to as Commander size.

Commander Details Recreated with Dedicated Parts

The Commander's slide is not simply a shortened Government slide; it is characterized by being designed as a dedicated part.

The position and length of the leaf cut, the slide stop notch, and the takedown notch are all different from those of the Government. WA faithfully models this by producing a dedicated slide.

The slide serrations are a classic straight style with 19 grooves, and the ejection port on the right side is deeply cut, but there are no case rollover notches as seen on modern 1911s, maintaining a basic form.

The roll mark (engraving) on the left side of the slide features the "pony" or "rampant Colt" that enthusiasts love, and the distinctive typeface follows that of the Colt Government Series 70.

On the right side, the Combat Commander's exclusive engraving is proudly etched, all of which are luxuriously reproduced through machining.

The dust cover at the front of the frame has been shortened by approximately 6mm to match the leaf cut. Also, a characteristic of the Commander frame is that the spur at the base of the grip safety at the rear of the frame is smoothly rounded.

Parts such as the thumb safety, slide stop, and magazine catch on the side of the frame are unified in an old-school design, but the hammer is a lightweight and compact ring hammer, and the corresponding grip safety has also been shortened. These are also points that have been realistically reproduced by manufacturing dedicated parts.

The grip panels, reminiscent of Colts from a bygone era, are made of blacked-out heavy-weight material, creating a profound sense of weight that is almost menacing.

Premium Gun Black Finish

Unlike modern tactical customs, the simple yet well-proportioned slide and frame, devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, are made using abundant carbon black heavy-weight (HW) material, which is highly acclaimed for its weight and texture.

The HW slides and frames are first sandblasted to achieve a matte texture, then polished on both sides of the slide.

This emphasizes the contrast between the curved matte finish and the glossy flat surfaces of the slide, recreating a realistic texture rich in three-dimensionality.

By applying the bluing (blackening) process, a unique HW manufacturing method, a deep texture reminiscent of gleaming iron, which cannot be achieved with ordinary painting, is reproduced.
