Around the 1860s, the setting for Western movies, shotguns often had the same number of barrels and ammunition capacity. Later, single-barrel repeating shotguns appeared. The Model 1897 was designed by the master of firearms design, John M. Browning, and was an advanced model for its time, incorporating a pump action system, an external hammer, and a tubular magazine. The finish was also kept within a practical range for mass adoption, keeping costs low, which led to its active adoption by police and the military.
Its performance was first-rate for a shotgun of its time, and it was fully demonstrated when the American Army took it to the trenches during World War I. To specialize in trench warfare, the barrel was shortened, equipped with a heat shield to prevent burns, and a bayonet could be attached. It was deployed on the battlefield as a specialized trench gun for close-combat. Combined with its Double-O-Bac (a shotgun loaded with approximately nine 8mm iron balls), it struck fear into the German army. Unlike modern hammer-loaded shotguns, the M1897 lacked a disconnector, allowing for slamfire (a rapid-fire system that allows rapid firing by pumping while holding the trigger), and its impressive stopping power in close combat earned it the nickname "trench sweeper."
Our model gun, a reproduction of the popular M1897, is finally available in a heavyweight model. Approximately 500g heavier than the ABS model, the body eliminates the flex typical of resin, giving it a more solid feel. The surface treatment has also been changed from heavyweight resin to a rough-grain blasted finish. Our specialty, the wooden stock and fore-end, also reproduce the color of a well-worn weapon.
Ver.2 also has improved operability, and now features the piercing explosion and stable firing power that only the parallel double-cap gunpowder specification can provide.
