What is the MCX SPEAR XM5?

The MCX-SPEAR is a modular assault rifle developed under the US military's NGSW (Next Generation Squad Weapon) program as a next-generation rifle. In 2022, the US Army officially adopted this model as the XM5 (later renamed XM7 → M7) and began deploying it as a successor to the M4 Carbine and M16. Its most significant feature is its compatibility with the newly developed high-pressure cartridge ".277 SIG Fury (6.8×51mm)," replacing the conventional 5.56mm, which significantly improves body armor penetration and effective range.

It employs a short-stroke gas piston operating system, with all controls being fully ambidextrous. It features a monolithic receiver structure, QD-compatible suppressor mount, adjustable gas block, and a lightweight M-LOK compatible handguard, incorporating high functionality designed for tactical operations. While the 16-inch barrel is common for civilian versions, military models also include 14.5-inch or shorter barrels.

Based on this military design, SIG offers a limited release of the "MCX-SPEAR" for civilian use, also supporting calibers such as 7.62 NATO and 6.5 Creedmoor. It maintains operability similar to the AR-15 platform while allowing for more powerful and flexible configurations, positioning it as the "ultimate combat rifle" of modern times. Despite its high price, it is a practical flagship model that combines accuracy, reliability, and modern warfare compatibility, attracting significant attention in both civilian and military markets.
