Los Angeles Police Department, Special Investigation Section (SIS)

The LAPD's SIS (Special Investigation Section) is an elite unit established in 1965 under the Robbery-Homicide Division (RHD) within the Detective Bureau.

It is known as a tactical investigative unit with the clear mission of tracking down and eliminating the most dangerous criminals. Due to the specialized nature of its undercover operations, it is not based within LAPD headquarters but in an anonymous office building in the infamous Skid Row district, located on the east side of downtown Los Angeles.

The SIS is composed of approximately 20 highly skilled investigators selected from within the LAPD. However, it is said that since the establishment of the SIS, only 110 individuals have qualified for the unit over 40 years.

Furthermore, the SIS was involved in over 50 shooting incidents between 1965 and 1992, using lethal force against 28 to 34 suspects. The unit is also known for sparking controversy, with the renowned Los Angeles Times deriding them as a "Death Squad."

Kimber SIS Custom

Kimber Manufacturing was founded in 1979, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the company began to attract attention in the American firearms industry.

This was due to their introduction of factory-custom 1911s to the market, which came pre-customized with features like highly operable thumb and grip safeties, easily visible front and rear sights, and a tuned trigger, making them ready to use right out of the box.

Before the emergence of the Kimber 1911, owners of basic 1911s with only fundamental features had to spend additional money and time having them customized by a gunsmith.

It's no exaggeration to say that the Kimber 1911, which met the demands of its time, has grown into one of the top firearms manufacturers in the United States.

Around 2007, the SIS commissioned Kimber to develop a specially customized 1911. This decision was largely influenced by the fact that the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Detachment 1 (MCSOCOM Det-1), and the LAPD SWAT team had already adopted custom 1911s from the company.

While the SWAT Custom II is a well-known Kimber 1911 officially adopted by the LAPD, its specifications are limited to adding checkering to the front strap of the Custom TLE II. In contrast, the SIS Custom features an exceptionally extensive and unique customization.

The most striking feature is the boldly designed cocking serrations, which bear the SIS designation. WESTERN ARMS has faithfully reproduced these by creating a dedicated mold.

The front part of the rear sight is deeply scooped out and also functions as a cocking shoulder. This design allows the slide to be racked by pressing it against a car door or the top of a holster in situations where the gun must be operated with one hand. It's an additional feature unique to the SIS, designed for use in all conceivable circumstances.

The hammer's ring part is smaller than that of a standard skeleton hammer, a design specifically conceived for the SIS Custom to prevent snagging when carried or when quickly drawing the gun from a holster.

The frame, which features 30 LPI (lines per inch) checkering on the front strap, is equipped with an integrated Picatinny rail on the dust cover. This is a regular-length rail with three slots, which is now standard, and can accommodate any size of accessory.

This 2026 version also features additional lightning cuts: two on the top of the slide and one on each side. These cuts lighten the slide and contribute to an aggressive appearance.

There are countless handguns officially adopted by law enforcement agencies, but a model customized to this extent and with such dedication to a unique design is truly rare.
